The Weekend Packing Checklist

A weekend bag should make a short break feel simple. The aim is not to prepare for every possible situation, but to cover the plans you have made and keep the things you need easy to find.

Use this checklist as a starting point for two or three nights away. Adjust it for the weather, your activities and anything your accommodation already provides.

First, check the shape of the trip

Before choosing a bag, answer four questions: How are you travelling? What will you do? What will the weather be like? What is available where you are staying? A city break, a beach weekend and a visit with an event in the diary need different packing lists.

If you are flying, check your booking’s current baggage allowance rather than relying on a general cabin-bag description. If you will carry your bag for a while, think about the walk as well as the space inside it.

The essentials that come first

  • The travel documents and booking details your trip requires.
  • Phone, wallet and keys, each with a clear place in your bag.
  • Charging cable and the charger your devices use.
  • Any everyday personal items you cannot easily leave behind.
  • Your accommodation address and arrival information saved somewhere accessible.

Keep these together while you pack so they do not disappear underneath clothing. Before leaving home, check them individually rather than assuming that everything important is already in your bag.

A small wardrobe that works together

  • Enough underwear and socks for the stay, with a spare if useful.
  • A small selection of tops and bottoms that can be worn together.
  • Sleepwear.
  • One adjustable layer for cooler moments.
  • Comfortable shoes suited to the walking you expect to do.
  • Swimwear or an outfit for a specific activity only when your plans call for it.

Lay out complete outfits before adding anything to the bag. Repeating a jacket or a pair of trousers is usually easier than carrying several pieces you might not wear. Check your plans before adding a second pair of bulky shoes.

A wash bag with a clear purpose

Take your regular essentials in quantities that suit the length of the trip. Check what your accommodation provides before adding another towel, bottle or appliance.

  • Toothbrush and toothpaste.
  • The personal-care products you actually use.
  • A comb or brush, if needed.
  • A small pouch for keeping loose items together.
  • A separate bag for damp or worn items on the return journey.

Close bottles securely and protect anything that could leak. Check the current restrictions that apply to your route before putting liquids or restricted items into a cabin bag.

The useful extras

Choose a few extras around the journey rather than packing them automatically. Headphones, a light day bag, a book or a travel pillow may be useful, but each one should have a clear role.

Keep cables in one pouch and leave a small amount of spare space. You may appreciate it when repacking quickly, carrying a snack or bringing something home.

The final five-minute check

  • Check the forecast and your arrival arrangements.
  • Carry the packed bag and remove anything that feels unnecessary.
  • Make sure your first-day essentials are easy to reach.
  • Check charging cables, documents, wallet and keys one last time.
  • Save the list, then edit it after the trip based on what you actually used.
